It seems like just a few months ago that I was writing about the raises for associates in Texas law firms. Now, several New York and California firms have raised the bar again. Abovethelaw has a roundup this morning of the firms that have matched, with salaries now starting at $160,000 for first-year associates and ranging as high as $310,000 for eighth-year associates. How long before Texas firms must raise salaries again?

Well, it turns out Adam has a bit of jaundice. His 36-hour bilirubin came back with a low-to-moderate risk on Friday, and so our pediatrician asked us to visit on Monday for another test. By Monday, though, Adam was looking pretty yellow, so the doctor sent us across the street to the hospital to get him tested, where they could give us quick results. If his bilirubin levels came back above 20 mg/dL, the doctor was going to have Adam admitted to the hospital for treatment. We’re glad that although Adam’s levels are high, they came in at 18.2 mg/dL, so he didn’t have to be admitted. Instead, we get to rent a “bili blanket” for use in phototherapy at home. The bili blanket is basically a light pad that’s inserted inside Adam’s blanket against his skin and sprays him with blue light 24 hours a day. The light causes the bilirubin to break down and be excreted, which in turn reduces Adam’s bilirubin levels. It’s not super convenient to keep him hooked up all day, but it’s certainly worth it to keep him at home.
